Comparing costs: Linio’s Beauty Price Index

Article-Comparing costs: Linio’s Beauty Price Index

In Vietnam, the average price for a unit of Botox (Allergan) is $5, a rhinoplasty $947 and breast augmentation $2,227. It’s pricier in the U.S., where average prices are $15 for each Botox unit, $9,162 for a breast aug and $7,800 for a rhinoplasty, according to a survey by online retailer Linio.

Linio’s 2017 Beauty Price Index looks at average prices in 50 countries and some major cities for in-demand beauty services, from cosmetic procedures to services, such as the Brazilian wax, and products, including anti-aging creams and hair dye.

Vietnam leads the way as the most affordable country for beauty products and services. India, South Africa, Thailand and Egypt follow. The U.S., ranked 43 of 50, is one of the more expensive countries for beauty products and services. Venezuela has the dubious distinction as the most expensive. According to Linio, that’s due to the South American country’s inflation crisis and exchange rate from the Venezuelan bolívar to the U.S. dollar.

When they compared U.S. cities of Miami, Los Angeles and New York, Botox prices were similar, but New York and LA were considerably more expensive than the South Florida city when it came to nose surgery and breast augmentation. In New York, for example, the average price of a rhinoplasty is $7,605, versus Miami, which is $4,987.

Following the U.S. in price are Sweden, Australia, Finland, Denmark, Norway and Switzerland, which is second only to Venezuela in the price ranking. Average cost for a rhinoplasty in Switzerland is $7,845 and for breast augmentation it’s $10,434, according to the price index.

According to Linio, cosmetic procedure prices were collected from at least three clinics per major city in each country.

The average costs reported in this survey are substantially different than those on the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s (ASAPS’s) Smart Beauty Guide. But that could be, in part, due to Linio reporting full retail prices and ASAPS listing only the average physician/surgeon fee for procedures performed in the U.S. in 2016. For example, ASAPS lists the average price for breast augmentation with saline gel implants at $3,990.
