Mini Tummy Tuck (Partial Abdominoplasty)

Article-Mini Tummy Tuck (Partial Abdominoplasty)

Procedure Description: The mini tummy tuck, or partial abdominoplasty, is often an excellent option for people who have a small amount of abdominal skin to be removed and do not have a significantly protruding abdominal muscle wall. Individuals whose abdominal area is beginning to sag due to aging or who have slim abdomens that they wish to sculpt into a more desirable shape may find that a mini tummy tuck is ideal for them.

Mini tummy tucks use a smaller incision so there is no need to remove the tissue connecting the navel. The belly button is either left in place or repositioned as with other techniques. Mini tummy tuck is done when there is a very localized fullness in the lower abdomen, so that less muscle repair and skin removal is needed.

Length of Procedure: The partial abdominoplasty requires one to two hours in surgery.

Recovery: The patient is usually released from the hospital or surgery center within a few hours of mini tummy tuck surgery. The recovery time is about the same as that for a c-section, which is at least six week. Most patients experience some postoperative pain, but it can be controlled with over-the-counter medication. Patients are usually able to return to work soon after getting a mini abdominoplasty but should refrain from strenuous activities for a few weeks.

Risks: Abdominoplasty is generally safe. However, risks vary depending on the type of anesthesia and exact procedures used.

Reactions to anesthesia are rare but can be serious. Necrosis of the skin that forms the belly button can cause loss of the belly button and scarring. Necrosis is more common in smokers. Pain will accompany any surgery but should be well controlled with pain medications. Severe pain can indicate a serious problem and should be discussed with your surgeon. Bleeding and/or collections of blood or fluids in the skin called hematomas and seromas are also a risk.

Results: Mini-tummy tuck results are usually permanent. They can be affected by future weight fluctuation or pregnancy.

Estimated Cost: The average cost of a mini tummy tuck is $3,900.
