  • Products are able to recreate the look of a natural tan
  • Local spas have tanning sprays or you can do it yourself

Many people long for those wonderful summer tans of yesteryear — everyone seems to look just a little bit better and healthier with a kiss of the sun! Still, with so many people paying a very high price for that healthy glow, it's time to be smart and join the ranks of the sun-wary.

But, here's the twist: You can look sun-kissed without paying the price.

The trick is to fake it! And now, there are so many ways of doing just that, including sunless tanning lotions, creams, tanning sprays, and even self-tanning gloves and towelettes.

New technologies have created a universe of products that can make you look as if you've spent a week in the tropical sun. Don't want to do it yourself? Go to your local spa and ask for a Fantasy Tan. You simply strip to your skivvies and stand in a booth, and your tan is sprayed on in minutes.

HOW TO DIY If you're the do-it-yourself type, try products such as Aveeno Active Naturals Continuous Radiance moisturizing lotion.

This breakthrough daily body lotion creates a radiant, even-toned summer skin whenever you moisturize. It combines natural soy with a subtle color enhancer to help even out skin tone and texture while gradually deepening skin's natural color, for a visibly healthy and natural look that's not orange or streaky. Or try L'Oréal Dermo-Expertise Sublime self-tanning lotion. This contains vitamin E and gentle alpha hydroxy acids to give the skin a radiant, healthy glow.

In less than an hour, it creates a streak-free, natural-looking tan. Jergens, which started the whole sunless tanner/moisturizing lotion craze a few years back, now offers an even wider selection of lotions for the face and body. For the face, check out Jergens Natural Glow, a lightweight, non-greasy lotion that is dermatologist-tested and won't clog pores. It comes in shades from fair to dark.

A brush can be used to deliver a touch of the sun to your cheeks, nose, or anywhere. Some women brush their legs with bronzing powder to give them a slight hint of summer color. A great brush-on bronzer is Chanel Irreelle Soleil. It comes in compact form, so it's portable and offers a natural, sunny look that can be retouched anytime, anywhere. Its big brush lets you powder on instant color that looks completely natural, not orange or fake.

Bonne Bell also makes a brush-on bronzing powder called Glimmer Bronze Highlighting Dust Gold 'n Glitz. The luminous loose powder leaves skin radiant and "sun-kissed," providing an instant but long-lasting glow that highlights eyes, cheeks and shoulders.

Zia Natural Skincare makes Ultimate Age-Defying Solar Care sunless tanner for sun-free color. It imparts the golden, sun-kissed look of a tan without the risks from sun exposure. The streak-free lotion uses natural sugars that provide rich, bronzed color and long-lasting results that fade naturally. Vitamins A and E and essential healing oils soothe and nourish, to improve the skin's softness and texture. This product can be found at fine health food stores nationwide.

This summer, be sun-wise and sunless, instead of longing for the good old days — and it will pay you much greater dividends in the long run!
