Valencia, Spain — The world’s first dual leg transplant patient took his first steps two weeks ago at a hospital here, and will eventually be able to walk unaided, doctors say.
The Telegraph of England reports that the patient — a man in his 20s whose identity was not released due to privacy issues — took his first post-surgery steps in a swimming pool at La Fe Hospital. A team of 50 doctors performed the procedure in July.
Pedro Cavadas-Rodriguez, M.D., told the Spanish news agency EFE that the patient “is doing very well” and has suffered no serious complications. The Telegraph report notes that Dr. Cavadas-Rodriguez told the news agency that treatment is going as planned but that it will be “many months” before the patient will be able to walk unaided.
