Cosmetic surgery grows in popularity among ethnic groups

Article-Cosmetic surgery grows in popularity among ethnic groups

Chicago — Cosmetic surgery has grown in popularity among non-Caucasians over the past five years, according to a newly released American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery survey.

More than half of respondents polled said such procedures have become more popular in their racial or ethnic group.

Asians reported that cosmetic surgery is most popular (31.4 percent of respondents), followed by Hispanics (27.4 percent) and blacks (18.8 percent), PRNewswire-USNewswire reports.

About one-quarter of respondents surveyed indicated they knew someone of the same racial/ethnic background who had undergone cosmetic surgery.

Facelifts are the most common procedure among Asians, according to the survey. Among black respondents, the top procedure is liposuction; for Hispanic respondents, it’s abdominoplasty.

More than 30 percent of respondents said they would seek a cosmetic surgeon of the same race/ethnicity as themselves. More than half (56.6 percent) said it would be difficult to find a surgeon of the same race/ethnicity as themselves.
