Procedure Description: A labiaplasty improves the look and function of the labia, or lips of the vaginal opening. The labia minora is the inner flap of skin that covers the clitoris and vagina. The labia majora is the portion of the labia on the outside of the body. The labia can become loose or stretched through sexual activity, hormones, childbirth or with age. In some cases the excess skin can present hygiene problems or make sexual intercourse and other activities uncomfortable. With a labiaplasty, the extra skin is removed and the labia reshaped into a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

During the procedure, the surgeon removes (with scalpel, radiofrequency cauterizing, or laser) excess tissue of the labia minora. The labia majora, on the outside of the body, can be reduced with either surgery or liposuction if needed.

Length of Procedure: A labiaplasty procedure takes one to two hours to complete.

Recovery: There is some discomfort and pain after this procedure, comparable to the tenderness one feels after giving birth. Medication and rest will keep you fairly comfortable after your labiaplasty. The doctor may require you to wear supportive undergarments. During your recovery, feminine hygiene products, vibrators, and sexual intercourse must be avoided for three to eight weeks to facilitate healing. You may return to work in two to five days. Strenuous activity can be resumed two to three weeks later.

Risks: Risks include scarring, infection, asymmetry of the labia, pigmentation changes, and an increased/decreased sense of feeling in that area.

Results: The results are considered fairly permanent. However it is possible for the labia to be stretched again by pregnancy or sexual activity.

Estimated Cost: The price ranges from $3,500 to $8,000.
