The FDA has approved a new over-the-counter, hand-held device for hair removal. According to SpectraGenetics, TRIA is the first hair removal laser to be approved for home use.

According to the company, TRIA features a diode laser that is safe and effective for at-home use. A version of TRIA called iEpi has been available in Japan since 2005.

"Many of my patients will be able to use TRIA for touch-ups in between visits as well as on other areas not treated in-office to achieve and maintain beautiful results, and I expect it to increase the number of patients I see for laser hair removal," says Eric F. Bernstein, M.D., clinical associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

TRIA will be available in the spring from medical professionals and select retailers. It can also be purchased online.
