While nonsurgical skin rejuvenation treatments continue to steadily increase in popularity, so does the competition in the field. However, one medspa in a small suburb with a population of 27,000 has overcome the odds to create a worldwide reputation as a global leader in nonsurgical facelifting by mastering the use of nitrogen plasma technology.

In the last three years, Shaun Charles MedSpa in Wakefield, Mass., has won an unprecedented four National Aesthetic Awards and a Global Plasma Award, prevailing among thousands of other competitors. Co-owners Shaun Spanos, MSN, APRN, NP, and Jeff Spanos, business manager, credit much of their success to the NeoGen Plasma Skin Regeneration (PSR) device and their partnership with Emergentmedtech (Hudson, N.H.), the exclusive distributor of the NeoGen plasma in the U.S.

“In just three and a half years since we introduced NeoGen PSR, it has become our main service, accounting for 80% of all treatments at our full-service medspa,” reported J. Spanos. “Thanks to our outstanding results with NeoGen PSR, our large social media following and the life-changing before-and-after comparisons we showcase, we have attracted hundreds of patients from across the country and around the world who travel to us for treatment.”

A Powerful, Non-Ablative Treatment

NeoGen PSR incorporates advanced technology that converts nitrogen gas into plasma energy for controlled thermal modification of the skin architecture while leaving the epidermis intact to act as a protective dressing. The full-field resurfacing treatments initiate tissue regeneration and deep neocollagenesis through all layers of the skin. The device is FDA cleared for seven approved indications, including acne scarring, actinic keratosis, facial rhytides, non-facial rhytides, pigmented lesions, seborrheic keratosis and viral papilloma. The NeoGen device is also used for a variety of off-label treatments, including melasma, rosacea, acne and more.

According to J. Spanos, NeoGen is a nonablative treatment that works on the entire structure of the skin without causing damage. “Unlike other treatments that rely on the skin’s wound healing response, NeoGen PSR uses nitrogen plasma thermal energy to restore substantial amounts of collagen, fibroblasts and elastin. One NeoGen PSR treatment can continue to improve skin for 12 to 24 months. Results from a properly performed NeoGen PSR treatment are considered permanent, although you normally continue to age,” he clarified.

Although non-ablative, NeoGen PSR provides a powerful skin resurfacing treatment for the face, neck and body using an ultra-high frequency generator to convert nitrogen gas into plasma. “NeoGen PSR offers a compelling alternative to traditional ablative treatments. Unlike many such treatments that require multiple sessions, NeoGen PSR can achieve effective results with just a single session when the correct energy level is used. This efficiency sets it apart from devices that often need a series of treatments,” he added.

The ability to customize treatments through tailored energy levels allows providers to treat all skin types and ages, as it addresses and enhances the entire skin structure, targeting multiple concerns at once. The treatment is suitable for the entire body, including the delicate periocular area, and promotes the formation of a natural barrier on the treated skin to facilitate recovery. According to the manufacturer, NeoGen provides corrective treatments with comprehensive ablative CO2 results, offering substantial improvements with significantly reduced downtime, risks and post-treatment complications.

Compared to fractional lasers, NeoGen PSR produces a trio of collagen types I, II, IV to restore volumetric skin features, and ensures uniform treatment, minimal swelling and results in as soon as 30 days. It also requires fewer clinic visits and avoids the volume loss and grid marks that may accompany microneedling. Additionally, NeoGen PSR is a comfortable treatment that typically results only in mild redness similar to a chemical peel.

“Our most popular NeoGen PSR treatment method combines high and low energy settings to deliver exceptional skin tightening results,” reported S. Spanos. “By strategically applying high-energy pulses in specific areas alongside a traditional low-energy treatment, we effectively address issues like sagging skin, poor elasticity and uneven texture.”

Tips for Success with NeoGen PSR

Jeff and Shaun are key opinion leaders (KOLs) for Emergentmedtech and NeoGen PSR and provide NeoGen PSR training to other medspas. S. Spanos offered some professional tips they count on for consistent and ideal outcomes. “The consultation and assessment is the most important thing to master in order to prescribe and apply the correct energy level to the skin,” he explained. “This skill is complex and is thoroughly taught in our specialized NeoGen PSR training sessions.

“In addition to this, it is equally important to assess the skin and reaction during the treatment,” S. Spanos continued. “We tailor our approach to each individual case, but generally, the skin must be thoroughly hydrated before treatment. To achieve this, we often use a hydrodermabrasion machine, a hyaluronic acid-infused sheet mask and sometimes a saline IV. Additionally, we recommend that patients start hydrating two weeks before the treatment by drinking 12 to 24 ounces of electrolytic fluid each day.”

With proper technique, NeoGen PSR effectively tightens, resurfaces and rejuvenates the skin and stands out as a reliable and comprehensive, nonsurgical skin regeneration device. By treating 100% of the skin, NeoGen stimulates deep-layer regeneration, remodeling natural skin architecture and fostering healing from within to treat fine lines, rhytides, unwanted pigmentation, large pores, loose skin, acne scars and more.

Dedication + Collaboration = Success

As recognized KOLs for Emergentmedtech and NeoGen PSR, the Spanoses’ contributions of combined knowledge, skilled application, expertise and passion have made them highly sought after in the medspa industry. To keep up, they continue to travel across the country to provide private training sessions for medspas and plastic surgeons and have completed over 5,500 treatments at their own spa, making them the most experienced NeoGen PSR provider by a significant margin.

“Our success with NeoGen PSR has led us to acquire and fully pay for three NeoGen PSR devices and we have dedicated three rooms exclusively for NeoGen PSR treatments,” reported J. Spanos. “We have been featured on newscasts, host a podcast, and recently participated in an expert presentation on NeoGen PSR at The Royal Society of Medicine in London via Zoom.”

Shaun Charles MedSpa has made its mark in the medspa space by mastering the NeoGen PSR device and collaborating with Emergentmedtech. As the demand for NeoGen treatments grows, the door is open for others. Their success story is an inspiration for providers who want to stand out, scale and thrive in today’s highly competitive field of aesthetics.
