CONTINUOUS EXTERNAL TISSUE EXPANDER FOR CLOSING WOUNDS

Wound Care Technologies introduces the DermaClose RC Continuous External Tissue Expander. The device helps close up wounds up to 15 cm in diameter by expanding the skin that surrounds the wound until it is stretched enough to be sutured. Usually the wound can be sutured within 24 hours although smaller wounds can take significantly less time.

The DermaClose RC Continuous External Tissue Expander contains 10 skin anchors, a tension controller and a skin stapler and staple remover. To use the device, the anchors are placed around the wound, about 1.5 cm from the wound's edge. Two skin staples hold each anchor secure. The tension controller's tension line is threaded around the anchors. The tension controller knob is then turned until the spring-clutch prevents any further tightening. Once there has been sufficient tissue expansion the wound can be sutured with minimal tension on the wound. Removal of the DermaClose RC requires cutting the tension line and removing the staples and anchors.

According to the company, there are several advantages to using the DermaClose RC Continuous External Tissue Expander. It provides an alternative to traditional skin flaps or grafts for the closure of large wounds. The device minimizes the need to undermine wound margins, therefore, resulting in improved tissue viability and less probability for tissue death. It significantly decreases scar length compared with other closure techniques. In addition, it permits easy and full access to the wound and the use of standard dressings.

The device can be used on a variety of wounds including acute surgical wounds, excisional wounds, traumatic injuries, chronic wounds and dehisced wounds.
