DenaVe improves efficiency for treatment of vascular lesions

With a patient-friendly 585 nm wavelength and no consumables, the DenaVe diode laser by Quanta System (Milan, Italy) provides cost-effective treatment of vascular lesions and more.

“I chose DenaVe because it offers a very effective and predictable wavelength for treating vascular lesions,” said Nazanin Saedi, M.D., an associate professor of dermatology and director of laser surgery and cosmetic dermatology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pa.

According to Dr. Saedi, the device’s 585 nm wavelength is more highly absorbed by hemoglobin than the traditional 595 nm pulsed dye laser (PDL) wavelength, which preferentially targets melanin. Energy absorbed by haemoglobin causes vessels to break down, and the body absorbs them over time.

Dr. Saedi also pointed out that with its solid-state fiberoptic delivery system, the DenaVe has the added benefit of no consumables. Conversely, she has to replace the $5,000 dye pack in her PDL every six months.

And, while PDLs require up to 15 minutes to warm up, the DenaVe warms up in one to two minutes, and its solid-state construction makes it more dependable, Dr. Saedi expressed.

These features make it “an easy return on investment,” she conveyed. “It is very efficient. There is no costly service contract or consumables, and the device itself costs less than other vascular devices.”

Delivering the 585 nm diode laser via fiberoptic technology, the DenaVe uniquely provides a PDL-like wavelength in either continuous or pulsed modes. “And it is just as effective for treating rosacea, facial vessels, port-wine stains and cherry angiomas – all the vascular conditions that we treat in dermatology – as well as benign pigmented lesions,” Dr. Saedi reported.

For rosacea or facial vessels, Dr. Saedi typically sets the device at 5 W with a 20 ms pulse. The device’s large spot size (1.8 cm2) allows users to treat larger surface areas relatively quickly. A full-face treatment takes less than ten minutes.

“DenaVe has EliteScan technology that allows you to control the pitch and tailor spot shape,” Dr. Saedi continued. “You can finesse how close or far apart you want those treated spots to be. This allows you to customize treatment for each patient.”

Treatment requires no anaesthesia. To start, “We wipe down the skin before we treat the desired area to make sure there are no impurities on the skin’s surface,” Dr. Saedi shared. During the procedure, an integrated chiller is attached to the handpiece, which delivers forced cold air to protect the epidermis and make patients more comfortable.

After treatment, patients experience slight redness and swelling but no bruising because the efficiency with which haemoglobin absorbs the 585 nm energy minimizes collateral damage.

“Typically, patients do not have any downtime. This is important to my patients as they do not want to take unnecessary time out of their lives,” Dr. Saedi noted. Patients typically undergo two to three treatments spaced one month apart.

In Dr. Saedi’s experience, the DenaVe is “easy to use, delivers the results I am looking for and is better for my patients and my practice.”
