Cynosure® (Westword, Mass.), recently launched its second-generation picosecond device, PicoSure® Pro. Nazanin Saedi, MD, department co-chair of Dermatology Associates at Plymouth Meeting (Philadelphia, Pa.), was one of the first physicians in the world to evaluate and use the new PicoSure Pro during the company’s limited product release. She noted that the marketplace has changed since Cynosure first launched PicoSure as the first and only commercially available picosecond laser on the market. Today, there are many picosecond laser options available, but PicoSure Pro stands out as the first and only picosecond laser FDA-cleared to treat melasma pigment, nevus of Ota and Hori’s nevus.
Dr. Saedi, who is fellowship trained in cosmetic dermatology and dermatologic surgery, and serves as volunteer faculty in dermatology at Thomas Jefferson University, recommends this laser to colleagues because it is so versatile. Practice providers can use it for facial revitalization, to treat brown spots, wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, pores and tattoos.
“The PicoSure device was originally launched for tattoo removal, but, over time, it became evident that it could do much more, especially for skin revitalization,” Dr. Saedi expressed.
The PicoSure Pro is unique because while it treats at 532 nm, 755 nm and 1064 nm wavelengths, it is the only picosecond laser that is primarily a 755 nm alexandrite laser.
Another distinguishing feature is PicoSure Pro’s Platinum FocusTM Lens Array handpiece, which fractionates the energy, allowing certain areas to get 20-fold the fluence that the user is emitting, according to Dr. Saedi.
“This laser-induced optical breakdown creates a unique reaction, which then starts the cascade of revitalization,” she explained. “You can revitalize the skin without causing serious injury which leads to very little downtime.”
The PicoSure Pro treatment causes an “elegant injury” above the dermal-epidermal junction. It stimulates new collagen and elastin and helps with skin revitalization. It brightens the patients’ skin, improves texture, pore size and more, Dr. Saedi reported.

r. Saedi uses the PicoSure Pro laser several times daily in practice, even for the treatment of tattoos. “The alexandrite is great for treating turquoise green and other treatment-resistant tattoo colors,” she stated. “But the 532 nm and 1064 nm handpieces are also very effective in treating pigmentation.” For example, Dr. Saedi uses the device to treat melasma pigment.
“I like the PicoSure Pro laser for treating melasma because there is less heat involved and more of a photomechanical effect,” she expressed. “It makes it ideal for treating deeper pigmentation conditions such as nevus of Ota and Hori’s nevus.” But, Dr. Saedi warns patients that melasma can come back after any treatment, including treatments with the PicoSure Pro.
Patients having PicoSure Pro treatments should expect that they will likely need multiple applications to achieve their desired outcomes. “There really is no downtime. Patients might be a little pink for 24 hours, but that is it. As people are being more social, the no-downtime is huge,” Dr. Saedi noted. “I tell patients, regardless of what we are treating, while I cannot get their skin to look 20 years younger, we can get it to look significantly better.”
With facial revitalization being in such high demand today, it is essential to have a device that is both effective and safe to use on all skin types, and the PicoSure Pro meets that requirement, Dr. Saedi concluded.
