Featuring four wavelengths and 14 delivery modes, StarWalker® from Fotona (based in the U.S. and Europe) provides physicians with much of the functionality of the company’s more comprehensive laser platforms such as the SP Dynamis®. This includes a virtually unrivaled ability to modulate the laser and its settings for maximum safety and efficacy, as well as combine nano- and picosecond pulse structures. As such, this third-generation device is a valuable tool for use on traditionally challenging-to-treat darker skin.

StarWalker’s selection of wavelengths (1064 nm Nd:YAG, 650 nm dye converter 585 nm and 532 nm KTP) can be delivered via a wide selection of handpieces for treating anything one would use such a laser for – tattoo removal, resurfacing and laser peels, as well as vascular and pigmented lesions – with 14 modes to choose from including MaQX, VERDE, VERSA, and those used in the highly successful Fotona4D® treatment. Adaptive Structured Pulse (ASP) and Variable Square Pulse (VSP) technologies allow modulation of both pico- and nanosecond pulses as well as combining the two simultaneously. The only thing more notable than its capability is its affordability compared to its predecessors. It is also smaller and more portable, making it especially suited for movement around the office or even between multiple locations in a multi-office practice group.

Valerie Monismith, RN, is owner of Ashtoria Aesthetics and Wellness in Collierville, Tenn., with extensive experience treating darker skin types with Fotona’s SP Dynamis, as well as her newly acquired StarWalker system. She reports getting great results. “I choose technology with the highest standards of safety and efficacy that I can use to provide patients with predictable outcomes. I especially enjoy devices whose versatility and customizability give me a broad palette with which to work,” she said. “Our capacity to customize the laser settings in so many ways with StarWalker and Dynamis allows us to treat all skin tones safely.”

Many applications on the Fotona lasers can be adjusted to minimize the heat and inflammation that can incite pigmentation issues, but still be therapeutically successful, often dramatically. Fotona’s advanced development of laser technology over 50+ years has produced lasers that do things others just cannot. “I have been treating darker skin tones successfully using Fotona lasers since 2015 to improve scars and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), remove café au lait spots and dermatosis papulosa nigras (DPNs), and for all over anti-aging,” Ms. Monismith noted. “ We get excellent, smooth-to-touch outcomes without hyper- or hypopigmentation. Being able to reduce or remove hyperpigmented skin conditions gives everyone a more youthful and healthy appearance and makes them very happy. These are the kind of results I can take pride in. And, after working with many other technologies over the years, before opening my own practice, I can confidently say that these two lasers – which are the only two that I use in my office – allow me to address any anti-aging or skin health concern that my patients present to me.

“These lasers are excellent, but it is also Fotona’s outstanding training and support in the U.S. and abroad that are a huge part of what makes them successful in my practice,” Ms. Monismith added. “Their in-depth training is essential for harnessing the full capabilities of the device, and with it, users can get great results with both StarWalker and Dynamis safely.”
