One of the most common skin concerns – hyperpigmentation – can be tricky to address. ALASTIN Skincare A-LUMINATE Brightening SerumTM, a brand-new brightening formula from Galderma (Carlsbad, Calif.), aims to change that for anyone seeking more even-looking skin. As the newest product addition to the ALASTIN Skincare lineup, A-LUMINATE is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of surface pigmentation without any harsh or irritating ingredients.
Deanne Mraz Robinson, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and co-founder of Modern Dermatology in Westport, Conn., served as an investigator in A-LUMINATE’s clinical trial. In this interview with The Aesthetic Guide (TAG), Dr. Robinson breaks down the science behind this groundbreaking formulation.
TAG: What excites you most about A-LUMINATE Brightening Serum?
ALASTIN hit a home run with this ground-breaking multi-modal formulation. Proprietary, targeted active ingredients support the skin at multiple steps of the melanogenesis pathway to help reduce the appearance of pigmentation, minimize its recurrence, and help protect the skin from future damage. What excites me most is the strong scientific backing. These are not just empty promises – these are outcomes demonstrated in the clinical study.
TAG: What makes discoloration so tough to treat?
There is no magic bullet to permanently address the appearance of dyschromia. Even when you have dark spots under control, new exposure can bring them right back. Even when you have the look of dark spots under control, having a clinically proven topical that can be used continuously to help address the appearance of dark spots is a long-awaited addition to our toolkit.
TAG: Why would you recommend A-LUMINATE to your clients?
Improving the appearance of surface pigmentation – whether caused by hormones, sun exposure or inflammation – is one of the most common concerns among my clients. In the clinical trial, I witnessed the positive impact of A-LUMINATE on the appearance of all forms of unwanted discoloration. The innovative formula includes Hexapeptide-11 to help protect against the look of post-inflammatory pigmentation; Hexapeptide-12 to help support a decrease of melanin production; and Phosphatidylserine to help decrease the appearance of vascularity.
TAG: Who would benefit most from this product?
I believe all patients with pigment issues would benefit from daily use of A-LUMINATE. In the clinical study, it was shown to be very well tolerated with no reported adverse events across Fitzpatrick skin types. The elegant formula has additional ingredients to improve the look of skin tone, radiance and texture – who doesn’t love that?
TAG: What sorts of results did you see from the clinical trials?
The results were impressive. In just four weeks, 86% of patients reported their skin looked brighter and more radiant. In eight weeks, patients reported a 90% improvement in the overall appearance of skin, 86% reduction in the appearance of dark spots and discoloration, and an 86% improvement in the evenness of skin tone.
TAG: Why is it important to use science-backed skincare?
Patients today are better informed than ever, and they want products that are rooted in science and have proven efficacy. ALASTIN has developed a trusted efficacious product line I always feel comfortable recommending to my patients.
